Story of Bharat Khadi

Founded on March 23, 1959, the Bharat Khadi Sevak Sangha was established with the mission of revitalizing India’s traditional industries. Registered under the Society Registration Act (Registration No. S/3516 of 1958-59) and certified by the Khadi & Village Industries Commission (Certificate No. BGL – 772), we have proudly earned the status of an ISO 9001:2008 certified organization.

Since our inception, we have been committed to empowering rural artisans and entrepreneurs by developing industry clusters that foster innovation, growth, and sustainability.

Our Core Objectives:

  1. Development of Industry Clusters:
We aim to create clusters of traditional industries to foster collective growth and strengthen the foundation of rural economies.

  2. Enhancing Competitiveness:
Our goal is to make traditional industries more competitive, market-driven, and profitable, ensuring sustained employment for artisans and rural entrepreneurs.

  3. Strengthening Local Governance:
By actively involving local stakeholders, we work towards establishing strong governance systems within industry clusters, enabling them to lead their own development initiatives.

  4. Promoting Innovation and Public-Private Partnerships:
We focus on building innovative traditional skills, adopting advanced techniques, and creating new public-private partnerships. This helps us develop market intelligence and replicate successful cluster-based models across the country

The Philosophy

After independence, the first prime minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, in 1952, planned to include this industry in the first Five-Year Plan. This proforma was handed over to Santh Vinovajee, who in turn, rejected the same, since according to him the scheme shall not be able to improve the socio-economic condition of the rural areas. Hearing this, Pandit Nehru called upon Santh Vinovajee to Delhi.  Santh Vinovajee walked from Pouneer Ashram to Delhi. Then, in consultation with him, the new All India Khadi Board was formed in 1953. In 1956, the Khadi Village Industries Commission (referred to as KVIC) was constituted and passed in the Parliament as an Act. Today khadi is used to make many products including kurtis. You can buy kurtis online for cheap.

Shri Vainkunth Lal Mehta – the famous Economist, was the first chairman of the KVIC. Another wing was formed in the name of the Central Certification Section, in KVIC, which used to certify the activities of the Khadi units across India, and Register them under Societies Registration Act, 1860. There was a further amendment done to the Act in 1961.
